16 Second Stare performing tonight at Whiskey's Club

16 Second Stare is performing tonight at Whiskey's Club on North Parkway.  It's been a whirlwind of a year for 16 Second Stare, a rock band from Tampa with ties to Huntsville and Muscle Shoals.

This summer, the band was invited on the 33-city Crue Fest 2 tour that included Motley Crue, Godsmack, Drowning Pool and Theory of a Deadman. The group started on a smaller stage performing to 500 or so people, but by the end of the tour was bumped up and performing before 15,000-20,000 fans.

Earlier this year, 16 Second Star performed at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas, and was part of a tour with Brian "Head" Welch, the former lead guitarist of Korn.

Also, "Complicated," the first single off their soon-to-be released second album, is getting airplay on Sirius Satellite's Octane channel and numerous radio stations.
All this success  - and the band still remains grounded and giving.

Beyond their regular slate of gigs, 16 Second Stare does benefits for local cancer organizations and earmarked proceeds from their new, unreleased grungy version of "Amazing Grace" for that. Last year, the band sent 10,000 copies of its debut, "Red Carpet Material," to soldiers in Iraq to show support. On Oct. 26, they will play at Love Ride 26 in Glendale, Calif., the world's largest single-day motorcycle fundraising event.

"I think we've got a pretty good spirit in the band," acoustic guitarist Tim Shanks said in a phone interview. The group plays tonight at Whiskey's Club on North Memorial Parkway. "That's what music is all about. You know, the songs don't have to be about something nasty and grotesque.

"I was in the Coast Guard, and that's where I learned how to play guitar, on the fantail of the ship. When we released our first album, we pooled our money together and were able to send 10,000 CDs to the troops."

How the band got started is an interesting story. About six years ago, Shanks was an administrator at a nursing home in Florida, but when he reported a nurse for allegedly not doing her job correctly he was abruptly fired. The next day, he bought a guitar. He hopes to one day tell the whole story (he's been involved in a lawsuit against the company for the last six years).

A friend of his from Huntsville, "Big Dave" Potts, introduced him to some musicians and started 16 Second Stare. Potts eventually got married, moved to Lakeland, Fla., and had to leave the band. Guitarist Todd Pettus of Muscle Shoals also has been a part of the band and Shanks hopes Pettus can one day return to 16 Second Stare.

"We have an interesting band - it's two bands in one," Shanks said. "Our first band has a Southern, bluesy rock feel to it. This one now is more aggressive rock."

When: Today, 9 p.m.
Where: Whiskey's Bar, 2616 N. Memorial Parkway

16 Second Stare in the Tampa Tribune

Tampa's 16 Second Stare will join the Crue in concert

Tampa hard rock act 16 Second Stare is making a break with its past.

The band released its debut album, "Red Carpet Material," early this year. Its eponymous follow-up comes out next month, and singer-guitarist Chris Davis is adamant that it won't sound like its predecessor.

"No way," he answers when asked whether "16 Second Stare" will continue in the mainstream vein of "Red Carpet Material."

"The first album was cool but this one has a totally different style," Davis says by telephone from Cincinnati, where he was waiting for his band's second stage set on the Crue Fest 2 tour.

The new album, he says, "is more like Pantera or Avenged Sevenfold, more aggressive, more in your face."

"We found out more people enjoy that in the live shows," he says with a laugh.

Crue Fest 2 organizers enjoy it as well, it seems. Davis says a listen to 16 Second Stare's new single, "Complicated," got them the gig on the tour, headlined by Motley Crue and featuring Theory of a Deadman and Godsmack.

The sound isn't the only change for 16 Second Stare. Its new lineup has been together for only about a month and a half, Davis says.

The biggest change, though, was bringing Davis up to the front.

"I was a drummer for five years," Davis says. "But they couldn't keep me behind the drums. I'm totally a rocker."

The lineup is completed by drummer Danny Cayocca, lead guitarist Dennis Kivak, singer Tim Shanks and bassist Kurtis Todd.

The group began by playing covers in North Tampa clubs, eventually writing the songs that became "Red Carpet Material." It honed its live act at its self-built amphitheatre in a Lutz backyard.

"We named it the Staregrounds," Davis says. "It's got a 30-by-50 foot stage we built. We promote shows there a week ahead of time and get all our family and friends out."

16 Second Stare also has hit the road with Brian "Head" Welch, the former Korn guitarist who left the band and converted to Christianity in 2005.

"He told us all the stories," Davis says. "It's amazing. He's turned his life around."

Head may have renounced his vices, but 16 Second Stare will probably need several cold ones after its set, which begins in late afternoon.

Which is fine with Davis.

"I like playing in the sun," he says with a laugh.

16 Second Stare to Play CRUEFEST

MOTLEY CRUE AND MONSTER ENERGY ADD ADDITIONAL STAGE TO CRUE FEST 2 – TWICE AS MUCH ROCK, SAME PRICE

REV THEORY, CAVO, SHRAM AND 16 SECOND STARE ADDED TO CRUE FEST 2 ON THE MONSTER ENERGY STAGE

LOCAL BAND TO BE CHOSEN TO PERFORM IN SELECT MARKETS ON CRUE FEST 2’s MONSTER ENERGY STAGE

New York, NY (June 10, 2009) – Crüe Fest 2 announced a partnership with Monster Energy to add an additional stage at most dates on this year’s festival. The new Monster Energy Stage doubles the entertainment value at Crüe Fest 2 with five additional bands - Rev Theory, Cavo, Shram and 16 Second Stare plus one band chosen locally in select markets, showcasing the next generation of rock. With no change in ticket prices, rock fans will now see ten great rock bands for the price of one.  For the cost of a Mötley Crüe concert, fans will see a day long rock festival with Mötley as the headliners.  Crüe Fest 2 kicks off in Camden, NJ on July 19th with tickets available now at www.LiveNation.com.

Crüe Fest 2 stars Mötley Crüe with Godsmack, Theory of a Deadman, Drowning Pool and introduces Charm City Devils. The performances on the Monster Energy Stage will be staggered between the main stage acts creating a non-stop music event and adding to the overall festival atmosphere.

"It's always been in our hearts to turn our fans onto new rock music. Another stage seems to be just what the doctor ordered for Crüe Fest 2 and gives loyal Crüe and rock fans more for their hard earned money.  See ya there," said Mötley Crüe's Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars, Vince Neil and Tommy Lee.

Mötley Crüe manager Allen Kovac notes, “Mötley Crüe has always added value for their fans whether it be through their music, their merchandise or their stage production, it has served them well in their career.”

Local radio stations will chose the opening band in select tour markets where the Monster Energy Stage will play. For more information about each local area contest and the chance to open the Monster Energy Stage, including how to enter, please visit www.cruefest2.com.

Monster Energy has dedicated its brand to live music over the years as part of major National and International festivals, specialty concert tours and substantial one-offs, in both core sponsor and associate sponsor categories utilizing on-site activation through multiple avenues. The partnership with Crüe Fest 2 marks the first time Monster Energy will have a mobile stage dedicated entirely to their brand.

Monster Energy Stage will create a unique online community offering exclusive content from Crüe Fest 2 acts, in addition to the local bands. To kick off this opportunity, the anthem of Crüe Fest 2, Charm City Devils’ “Let’s Rock-N-Roll,” will be available as a free download. The new site is set to launch soon, visit www.monsterenergy.comfor details.

“Mötley Crüe is such an iconic band with the most loyal fans in the world. In a time where it seems everything is being cut back, Mötley Crüe is giving more to its fans and at the same time giving up and coming bands exposure.  Monster Energy is proud to be a part of the havoc that will be wreaked across the nation this summer,” says Brent Hamilton of Monster Energy.

The Monster Second Stage will not travel to Minot, ND, Portland, OR, Las Vegas, NV, Kansas City, MO and Syracuse, NY

TAMPA-BASED ROCK POWERHOUSE 16 SECOND STARE TEAMS UP WITH AWARD-WINNING DIRECTOR JUSTIN “MURRAY MILE” MURRAY FOR THE MUSIC VIDEO TO HIT SINGLE, ‘RED CARPET MATERIAL’

Indie rock group, 16 Second Stare has teamed up with the inventive young director, Justin “Murray Mile” Murray (www.murraymile.com), for the debut of the band’s new music video for their current single, “Red Carpet Material”—also the title track to their acclaimed debut album.  Click here to watch the video.

Murray also lensed “Take Me Back,” the official commercial for NWA (National Wresting Alliance) which stars 16 Second Stare. The commercial has already hit popular networks including VH1, MTV, Comedy Central, TBS and Fuse and will continue to air throughout this summer in certain U.S. markets.

Murray is also working on his film directing debut project, “Fox Hunt.”

The success of another fiery 16 Second Stare cut from the collection, “Ballad of a Billy Rose,” is also snagging fans across the country thanks to rock radio airplay. 16 Second Stare was named one of Clear Channel Online’s “Top Artists to Watch” for April 2009. Do A Rock N Roll Double Take With 16 Second Stare

Published in Ft. Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL 1/17/2009
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/features/lifestyle/sflsh16homegpbjan16,0,4850088.story

Todd Pettus and "Angry" Tim Shanks, the frontmen for 16 Second Stare, are giving crowds a double dose of straightforward rock 'n' roll. They take turns on the mike and supply heavy guitar riffs for the four-piece outfit formed three years ago.

It wasn't in the original plans to have two lead vocalists. But the chemistry couldn't be denied.

"We're complete opposites," Shanks said. "He's laid back. I'm aggressive. It works."

The Detroit-bred Shanks brings a bluesy, Tom Waits style with his raspy, smoky voice. The Alabama-born Pettus lends a rebel-rock edge. Together, they're a blend of modern meets old-school. Backed by bassist Miguel Gonzalez and drummer Chris Davis, the group released its debut Red Carpet Material disc last fall.

Miamian Gonzalez joins the rest of the band's Sunny Isles residents for their regular gig at the Newport Beachside Resort, 16701 Collins Ave. The hotel's becoming a second home for the group when they return to South Florida from playing venues from New York to Los Angeles.

Matching their intense playing style, the band's mapping out an intense multi-city national tour to promote their new disc. Dates are listed at myspace.com/16secondstare.

The gigs include two local stops this month. First up is 10 p.m. Saturday at Alligator Alley, 1321 E. Commercial Blvd., Oakland Park; alligatoralleyflorida.com or 954-771-2220. The group then heads south to join a lineup that features Hilary McRae, Origin and others, Jan. 30 at Tobacco Road, 626 S. Miami Ave., Miami; tobacco-road.com or 305-374-1198.

16 Second Stare plays Pegasus

Saturday, January 10th 16 Second Stare returned to Tampa in what was a real dirty rock n roll concert. Fans were on the stage, Tim was angry and bumping into walls, someone came on stage and sang backup to Down, Meanwhile, Todd was rocking so hard he blew his amp, or maybe spilled beer on the head, either way they showed why Tampa and Pegasus is 16 Second Stare country....!

16 Second Stare Tour Updateand News

16 Second Stare's last date on the a tour which consisted of LA, NYC, CT, Miami, Tampa and St. Pete was to be at the band house...the way it should be. It's a stage that was built on 20 acres behind the house with trails and fire pits. That afternoon clear channel's 98 Rock announced a pay for play to benefit children. The band donated monies to the cause and suddently Tampa/St. Pete finally got a dose of 16secondstare. In fact, if you go to the 98 Rock website they are listed. 98Rock went over and beyond and really helped out 16secondstare and seemed to really like the way the band RAWKED!!!!!!! The phones were ringing at the station and the show was another success. The band wants to thank 98 Rock and all of those who called in with their support!

16 Second Stare is leaving for Atlanta on Wednseday to finish recording two more singles and then taking the rest of the year off for Christmas. The tour resumes in January. If you want to see 16secondstare simply go to 16 Second Stare.com. There you will find a feature called Demand Us. It helps determine where shows are to be played. So far, January will have stops of LA, Miami, Tampa, St.Petersburg, Nashville, Louisiana and Alabama..

Pegasus Lounge- Dec 5th 2008

The boys returned home to play in front of their home crowd for the first time since "Rocktober Fest 08," and the first bar scene they performed since "The Green Parrot" in 2007. It was a great homecoming for the guys. Last time they played a bar in Tampa, they had only 5 songs ready. Now they came with a full album, that hit #34 on the Top 40 Indicator charts, and a new band member, Amber Nicol. They were the headliner group for the night, and they lived up to their role. They had a very good crowd, some of their die hards were there, as well as stragglers from the bands before them that never heard 16 Second Stare play. They played "One More Time, Goodbye, Ballad Of BIlly Rose, Red Carpet Material, Anymore, Roxy, and Down which Amber Nicol took over on bass for; and as a special treat, they played Amazing Grace coming off their new album currently in production. They ended the show at 1:00 AM, and the crowd wanted more, ENCORE, ENCORE they shouted. The guys eagerly agreed, Miguel took over the bass and Todd got on the mic saying "Ok, Ok, we have one more song for you, and we all know what song you wanna hear." Then the guitars started to play Free Bird; a song that joined the band when they were playing covers back in 2003-04, and 16 Second Stare knows how to rock it out. Todd whose a great southern guitarist, makes the song magical. After the show, 16 Second Stare hung around with their fans, signing autographs and having drinks to celebrate a job well done.

16 Second Stare ROCKS Stamford

Saturday, November 15th 2008 the ritzy town of Stamford Connecticut, satelite home of the University Of Connecticut, got a taste of what the south has to offer the rock world with 16 Second Stare.

The band has charted on UCONN's radio station which helped bring the band to Connecticut to play. Its the first time they ever played in New England, and they didn't disappoint.

The show was played at Rack N' Roll, a local bar and grill with a pool and concert hall mixed in. A place fit for the tired college student looking for something to unwind with after a hard day of learning. 16 Second Stare came to wake them up; they started the night off playing Down, followed by Anymore, Take Me Back, Red Carpet Material, Ballad Of Billy Rose, Better Man, One More Time and finished the night off with the hard rock sound of Roxy; off their album Red Carpet Material.

The band was on the ball and brought energy to the stage playing to a great crowd. One of the viewers came all the way from Indonesia to watch them play, a Facebook friend that certainly showed her dedication to the band.

16 Second Stare not only made an impression on the owner of the club, but the featured band Human X as well. After the show, one of the members came up to me and said “Dude, you guys ROCK! What a great sound you have.. I see great things for them in the future.” What a great compliment to hear especially from another hard rock band.

This was the last stop of their northern tour, that started in New York City. The band now heads back home to Tampa, then onto Miami; to put on another show at the end of the week at the Dive Bar in Ft. Lauderdale.

16 Second Stare performs on stage at Hollywood's Musicians Institute at The Independent Music Conference. The Miami-based foursome showed IMC showcase attendees why Florida continues to produce top notch indie rock bands.

Since opening its doors in 1977, Musicians Institute has primed over 20,000 musicians, producers, engineers, vocalists and industry professionals for successful careers in every genre of contemporary music. Located just blocks from the Capitol Records tower, MI has an incredible history of innovation dating back to its origins in 1977 as the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT), which broke new ground as a performance-based contemporary music school taught by working professionals. Within a few years, GIT was joined by bass and drum programs to form Musicians Institute and the evolution has continued to this day with degree and certificate programs for career-minded guitarists, bassists, drummers, vocalists, keyboardists, recording engineers, independent producers, guitar makers, music business professionals and filmmakers.

16 Second Stare Tour Update and News

12.15.2008

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

16 Second Stare ROCKS Stamford

11.18.2008

Saturday, November 15th 2008 the ritzy town of Stamford Connecticut, satelite home of the University Of Connecticut, got a taste of what the south has to offer the rock world with 16 Second Stare.

The band has charted on UCONN's radio station which helped bring the band to Connecticut to play. Its the first time they ever played in New England, and they didn't disappoint.

The show was played at Rack N' Roll, a local bar and grill with a pool and concert hall mixed in. A place fit for the tired college student looking for something to unwind with after a hard day of learning. 16 Second Stare came to wake them up; they started the night off playing Down, followed by Anymore, Take Me , Red Carpet Material, Ballad Of Billy Rose, Better Man, One More Time and finished the night off with the hard rock sound of Roxy; off their album Red Carpet Material.

The band now heads  home to Tampa, then onto Miami; to put on another show at the end of the week at the Dive Bar in Ft. Lauderdale.
